Smashing Pumpkins Light Up Vegas with 'Shiny and Oh So Bright' Tour

The Smashing Pumpkins brought their own glitter and light to Vegas with the Shiny and Oh So Bright Tour at T-Mobile Arena, a magnificent three hour plus show, and a reunion of sorts, with vocalist Billy Corgan, guitarist James Iha and drummer Jimmy Chamberlain touring on stage together for the first time in 18 years.

The night began with “Disarm” from ’93’s Siamese Dream, the crowd loudly singing along to "I used to be a little boy...", while giant video screens flashed a slideshow of Corgan’s childhood photos. The continuing lengthy 31 song set featured a few well chosen (albeit unusual) covers, and a mostly nostalgic list of hits that made the band iconic in the '90’s. The show was a huge production, heavy on visuals and video, with retro images of the original three members floating behind the band for much of the set.

It was a quite a ways from the first time I saw the Pumpkins, at a little club called Max’s on Broadway back around ’90 - a new band from Chicago, in second hand paisley and corduroy with an attitude. Now nearly three decades later the band has come to a new pinnacle, with the bulk of the original lineup in tow, new music, and a huge tour culminating (at least this leg) full circle in Chicago in November.

The band has announced an upcoming ‘comeback’ album Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun, which will be the first album to feature these same founding members Billy Corgan, James Iha, and Jimmy Chamberlin recording together since 2000. The Pumpkins' setlist included “Solara” from the upcoming album, which is slated for November 16th release.
