CORROSION of CONFORMITY with CROWBAR - WEEDEATER - MOTHERSHIP - PAPSMEAR at FREMONT COUNTRY CLUB

This show was stacked with some of the heaviest bands we have seen in one show in a long time, as Fremont Country Club in downtown Las vegas was host to Corrosion of Conformity along with NOLA's Crowbar, Weedeater, Mothership, and Vegas locals Papsmear. Starting off the night was one of Las Vegas’s longest performing speed / thrash metal bands PAPSMEAR, who have been around since way back in 1985. After being on and off again over the years, the band has reformed and once again are a force to be reckoned with. Papsmear is one of the best thrash bands in Vegas locally and they had a great show at the FCC.

MOTHERSHIP is a supersonic intergalactic heavy rock trio based out of Dallas, Texas, and consists of brothers Kyle Juett on bass/lead vocals, Kelley Juett on guitar/vocals, and Judge Smith on drums. I last caught these guys at Psycho Las Vegas a couple of years back, and these guys have swagger and can back it up - they are hard, heavy and a must see. The heavily tattooed Kelley Juett is a madman on his Flying V guitar, and I love this band.

WEEDEATER, another Psycho LV veteran stoner / doom metal band based out of North Carolina, blew me away when they hit the stage, and crowd went wild and the biggest pit of the night opened up. Weedeater looks like what happens when you take the banjos away from the hillbillies and give them guitars. Lead singer and bass player Dave "Dixie" Collins, with his crazy eyes, taunted the crowd, occasionally giving them the finger making them go even more crazy. At one point the crowd pushed on the barricade in front of the stage nearly toppling it over - Weedeater was the fuzz monsters of the night

One of the heavyweights of the night, Louisiana based sludge metal band CROWBAR was direct support for the show, led by Kirk Windstein with his trademark gray / black beard and brooding vocals. This band is what the sludge sound is all about. During the set Kirk had prodded the crowd into chanting CROW-BAR...CROW-BAR..., and that’s when the mosh pit opened and the building began to shake as the band broke into "Planets Collide". As always a great show by a band you can count on to deliver a killer set!

Headlining the evening was CORROSION of CONFORMITY based out of Raleigh, NC, a hard rocking band that has played Vegas numerous times over the past few years. The band has again Pepper Keenan on guitar and vocals, Mike Dean on bass, Reed Mullin on drums and Woody Weatherman on lead guitar. Keenan was a founding member of the supergroup Down, before re-joining COC for the last few tours. Woody Weatherman is an amazing guitar player, who makes his guitar scream and moan throughout the show, and Mike Dean is a bass player who sets the tone and provides powerful backing, along with Reed's perfect drumming, which is the engine that drives the COC train. It was amazing how the crowd sang along to every song, and Keenan took a step back from the mic and let the crowd do their thing, asking “do you want some heavy shit?” Did he even have to ask? A solid show by COC, as well as some of the heaviest bands around great night of metal.
