THE DEAD DAISIES with HOOKERS & BLOW & Honor Amongst Thieves at Fremont Country Club

It’s not often you see a true rock 'n roll super group play a small club setting, but that’s exactly what happened in downtown Las Vegas when The Dead Daisies, with guests Hookers & Blow made a stop at the Fremont Country Club. Opening the show was local favs Honor Amongst Thieves, who started playing almost immediately as they opened the doors, then it was on to Dizzy Reed’s Hookers & Blow. This band is comprised of Dizzy Reed (Guns n Roses), Alex Grossi (Quiet Riot), Johnny Kelly (Type O Negative) and Robbie Crane (Black Star Riders). Hookers & Blow has been together now for 15 years with a rotating cast of all star musicians, and of course their set is heavy on GnR material, and also a pretty cool version of David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust" tossed in. Hookers & Blow was fun band to set things in motion for the night.

DEAD DAISIES took the stage to headline the night, and all I can is WOW, what a band and what a sound. This band stormed the stage and kicked things off with "Resurrected", a guitar driven song that got the crowd surging forward to get a closer glimpse of this supergroup. Dead Daisies consists of Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake, Dio) on guitar, John Corabi (Motley True, The Scream) on vocals, Marco Mendoza (Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy) on bass, David Lowy (Red Phoenix, Mink) on guitar, and Deen Castronovo (Bad English, Journey) on drums. The first half of the show was comprised of songs from the bands current and previous CD’s, then the band played a variety of covers with a killer medley of "Highway to Hell", "The Boys Are Back in Town", "Rock and Roll All Nite", "Smoke on the Water", and "Heaven and Hell". They also covered the Rolling Stones' "Bitch", and one of the highlights for me was when they played Deep Purple’s "Highway Star", which really showcased guitar superstar Doug Aldrich’s incredible talent. There are guitar players that just stand out from the others, some who just have that something different in the way they play and Doug Aldrich has that something. This is a great supergroup touring and a must see band! Dead Daisies closed out the night with Dizzy Reed coming back onto the stage to help rock the final number "Helter Skelter". The whole night was a blast, and we look forward to seeing these guys next time they come through Vegas.
