It's been awhile since I have seen Rival Sons, and to have them co-headline with Clutch made this a must see show for me! Both band are fantastic, and I was excited for a full night of great rock'n' roll. Opening up the show was Black Stone Cherry, who I have never seen before, but love their music. I got to Brooklyn Bowl in Las Vegas Linq Promenade early, and there was already a decent line, as it got closer to show time the venue started filling up and by the time Black Stone Cherry took to the stage the venue was packed.
Black Stone Cherry has been around since 2001, and was a great choice to open up the show, these guys do not disappoint. The band opened with the song “Me and Mary Jane” , and followed that up with the song “Again”, by far one of my favorites of the night. This band does not stay still, all the members running and jumping all over the place from one side of the stage to the other and the pace never stops! We were treated to a new song, “Out Of Pocket”, which debuted just hours earlier in the day (the single featured Jesse Leach of Killswitch Engage), from the newest album Screaming at the Sky, their 8th release, out now on Mascot Records.
Lead vocalist Chris Robertson told the crowd they were from Kentucky, and brought some of that trash with them, as they kicked into the title track from Screamin', and the crowd really gave back, singing along to the newer song, the band has longtime hardcore fans and it. showed. The band closed out their relatively short but killer set with “Lonely Train”, and what a show. Love, Love Love this band. Check out the new record and more HERE.
Vegas LOVES Clutch and always turns out in force to see them and this night was no exception. Clutch is a down' n'dirty American rock'n'roll band, who make you feel like you need a shower after you see one of their shows. Lead singer Neil Fallon is one of the great frontmen of this type of music and captivates the audience the moment he hits the stage, along with Tim Sult on lead guitar, Dan Mains on bass, Jean-Paul Gaster on drums and Neil Fallon on vocals, this band is an American treasure.
Clutch opened with the song “Mercury", from what many consider to be their best album released back in 2004, Blast Tyrant, to which fans were treated to in its entirety for this tour, along with some classic Clutch added in. It was fascinating to watch the crowd sing each and every song along with the band, and they had a lot of singing to do - the band performed a lengthy 19 song set. Even a minor sound issue a few songs in could not deter; Neil told the crowd, “Of course this has to happen on the last show of the tour”, but the band rocked on. Clutch finished up the set with "Bing and Purge and "X-Ray Visions" really closing out their set with a blast for the fans.
The band released their newest album Sunrise on Slaughter Beach in 2023, and you can check it out HERE and more on the band HERE.
Rival Sons co-headlined with Clutch alternating nights on the tour, and headlined and closed out the Vegas show. Lead singer Jay Buchanan has one of the best voices in music today, he has an almost spiritual sound to his singing, and he opened the show walking out on stage barefoot wearing a suit and carrying an acoustic guitar. The crowd grew silent as the first chords of “Shooting Star” echoed through the venue
I've never seen a band start off their show with an acoustic solo number, but Rival Sons pulled it off with Jay evoking emotion through the power of his singing. No better song outside of "Feral Roots" highlights Jay's amazing singing ability. The band joined and followed the opening up with “Mirrors” from their Darkfighter album, and this is where you get to hear the amazing guitar sounds from Scott Holiday, along with bassist Dave Beste and Mike Miley on drums. It's hard to believe this band is 15 years old now, and how solid they have become.
Rival Sons put out not one, but two records in 2023, companion records Darkfighter and Lightbringer, and we got a taste of both in the set, along with classic “Rapture”, where Jay told the crowd that “every story starts with a beginning”, and that is exactly what this band does - it tells us a story through their music, and its a great journey. For “Dark Side” we were treated to the double neck guitar playing by Scott, which sounded sooooooo good... Before the chilling “Feral Roots”, Jay told the crowd, if you grew up the way he did spending all your time outside you start to lose your mind. "Feral Roots" has become an epic song of their shows, and the band played a fantastic extended version that really
Rival Sons is one of those must see bands when they are on tour, and this was no exception. Check out the 2023 release and more HERE.
